On the Mend

Well anyone who follows us on Facebook would know that we had an eventful few days. On Sunday night Will became really ill around 10 pm. He was moaning and shaking uncontrollably in his crib. Signs I've never seen him do. After observing him for a half hour and noticing his hands looked a little blue we went to the ER. As soon as they put his SAT monitor on they noticed his oxygen was in the low to mid 80s and he had a 102 temp. He did finally vomit a little while in the ER. He's such a strong boy. We knew he needed to vomit at home but he refused to. They gave him blow-by oxygen and got him on an IV. Again, Will was such a strong boy. He didn't cry at all when they put in the IV. They did a chest x-ray which showed no signs of pneumonia. We started nebulizers. Around 2:30 am we were moved to a room on the Peds floor. Finally, Will fell asleep at 3:30 am. He slept with blow-by oxygen on him during the night. By this time his fever had broken. We finally got some sleep too. At about 7 we were all awake. He did really good throughout the night. Not waking once and his SATs were good too. You could tell he still wasn't himself in the morning. He had quite a cough and still needed blow-by oxygen. He started drinking some apple juice and around 10 we tried taking him off the oxygen to see how he would do. The docs rounded on him around 11 and the plan was to continue doing nebulizers every 4 hours and blow-by oxygen and probably stay the night again. He was diagnosed with bronchiolitis.

The nurse brought in some toys; a large tractor and wagon, a drum set and a ball. Will lit up at the sign of these toys. I think he (and his parents) were getting tired of the Disney movies. He ate quite a few cheerios and drank quite a bit of juice. He was really starting to act like himself. He enjoyed playing on our make-shift beds with the tractor. He went down for a 2 hour nap with no blow-by oxygen. And when he woke he was ready to go. He kept saying "go" and pointing to the door. He was also trying to walk away but couldn't because of all his monitors.
By 4 pm Will had eaten 3 popsicles and really into playing with his toys. The doctors came around a few more times and noticed his improvements. They were really pushing for a evening discharge since Will wasn't on oxygen, eating and drinking well, and his SATs were great. Around 5:30 Will ate some french fries and another popsicle. We got the go ahead for discharge and were out of the hospital and home by 7pm that night. (We don't waist anytime to get out of a hospital.)

Will is doing good at home. He has a really raspy, loud cough and runny nose. He's back to his usual self, just tuckers out a little earlier than normal. His momma has a cold now too. We both are trying not to get Daddy sick. We follow up with his pediatrician tomorrow. They say this respiratory infection should clear up in a few days. He's no longer contagious. He just sounds awful like he would be, so we are taking it easy this week.

We are just so proud of Will. He fights through his sicknesses so quickly with no complaining. He truly is Iron Will.

Thanks for the update Shannon. Glad to hear he is home and doing well. I give you and Adam credit for being brave as well during these difficult times. Way to stay strong together! Get well wishes to Will as he continues to get stronger each day. Glad he could see the positive side of the hospital situation by having new toys to play with and not crying.
